Friday 14 – 24 Pieces each
Morning, continue to unpack and intro for participants that did not make the evening before. Morning will be all about Smoke firing and Fuming. We will be using feathers, hair, pine-needles etc... For this firing, pieces can be stacked up so you can fire 5-8 pieces each.
We will also prep some pieces using washes for an electric firing overnight and smoke firing on Saturday. 5-8 pieces each.
Late morning will be about fuming. 2-4 pieces each.
After noon will be about Saggar firing 2-4 pieces each
Saturday 7-10 pieces each + the 5-8 from the electric kiln firing. Morning will be about smoke firing and saggar firing the pieces fired overnight (5-8 pieces each) and going over the cleaning and finishing process of the Smoke and saggar fired work.
After Lunch we will move on to the raku firing process. 7-10 pieces each. Late Saturday, discuss/troubleshoot work produced and decide on the firing schedule for Sunday.
Sunday 14-22 pieces.
Explore the firing processes as decided by group. # of pieces will be based on selected firings as listed above so could be 14-22 pieces.
What to bring:
The work: I have 2 Raku kilns and we can fit up to 6 kiln firings in a day. That represent about 40-60 pieces person. Pieces need to be kept to 15” in height or lower and 6” or less on the width. “Better to take unfired pieces home than not have enough”.
***Bring or ship pieces made of stoneware, porcelain, or raku cone 10 clay bodies bisque fired to cone 06/05 (lower gets better blacks). Dark and light clay bodies do make a difference so bring both if you can. Burnished vessels for the smoke firing using hair, feathers, hay and pine needles. These Burnished vessels are also great for the saggar firings. If you prepare your pieces with Terra Sig. bring them. They also look beautiful! Non burnished vessels do have a different look so it’s good to try them as well.
Preferred forms are wheel thrown vases with consistent wall thickness. Hand-built sculpture, open forms and flat forms have a harder time surviving the thermal shock but that has never prevented us from exploring
these finishes, we just expect a higher loss. Keep forms to less than 6” wide in-order to fire the estimated numbers.
All aspects of materials, application, and firing techniques will be covered and all necessary materials will be provided. Feel free to bring any of your own Raku or other low-fire glazes to use.
*Bring your feathers, hair. If you are driving, bring glossy magazines for the reduction process if you have them.

It is important to wear protective clothing such as jeans, long-sleeve cotton shirt and shoes/boots that cover your feet well. Leather is recommended, stay from synthetic material. I have the jackets and eye protection but if you have your own, you are welcomed to bring it.
